God Said, “Play for Me”: Conversation with Kirby Velarde, Lead Guitarist (Episode # 423R)

When Kirby Velarde started “Playing for God,” it catalyzed a process that included playing gospel music for Heritage Christian Center in Denver, Colorado, a congregation that has had up to 10,000 members, and playing for legendary gospel music great Kurt Carr.

Accomplished musician Kirby Velarde was born into a musical family. He elevated his artistic pedigree to new heights when he followed God’s call on his life. On today’s episode of The Voice of Leadership, Kirby plays his music and tells Dr. Karen about the expansion of his musical journey to include gospel music.

“Sebastian’s Song” of Hope and Healing with Michael Casaus and Naomi Natale (Episode # 389R)

When parents Michael Casaus and Naomi Natale learned their then two year old son Sebastian had a rare, aggressive, and incurable Stage IV cancer they used their collective skills to create partnerships and a non-profit organization to raise funds to find treatments and a cure. They also created a community art project, “Sebastian’s Song” that has curated healing songs from around the world. Michael is The Wilderness Society’s New Mexico state director, environmental advocate, long-term non-profit leader, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation Fellow. Naomi is an award winning community artist activist and Fellow of multiple organizations including TED Global. Author Patricia Raybon: Truth and Courage in Writing and Life (Episode # 500)

Patricia Raybon, author of the three part Annalee Spain Mystery series, writes daring and exciting “history mysteries.” Her third novel in the series, “Truth Be Told” was recently listed as a New York Times Book Review pick, her second in the series, “Double the Lies” won the Christianity Today Book Award for Fiction, and her first book in the series,” All That is Secret” won a Christy Award for First Novel and was selected by NBA All Star Steph Curry as a Literati Book Club Selection.

A writer of faith by day and mystery by night, Patricia Raybon also authors devotional writing for the publication, “Our Daily Bread.” And, she appeared on The Today show for a non-fiction work, “My First White Friend.” As an early career newspaper journalist Patricia won multiple awards for feature writing during her years at The Denver Post and later at the Scripps Howard Rocky Mountain News. Mid-career she taught print journalism for 15 years to bright graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

She is also published in The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, USA Weekend, Guideposts, In Touch Magazine, Christianity Today, the Washington Post, and National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition.
